Equality & Diversity
Sunderland Culture recognises, celebrates and values the diversity of our audiences, staff and community. As an organisation receiving public funds with high profile venues, we aim to act as an exemplar of good practice and to influence our participants, stakeholders and local community to share in our values.
We actively seek to promote and support the work of artists from diverse backgrounds and to enable visitors from diverse and/or disadvantaged backgrounds to enjoy and participate in our work. We ensure that this commitment is demonstrated through all aspects of business – our governance structure, staff recruitment and training, creative programme and audience development activities.
Sunderland Culture’s Equality and Diversity policy
In June 2020, Sunderland Culture joined together with the North East cultural sector to denounce racism. We stand together in solidarity with individuals and organisations that are anti-racist, and embed equality and tolerance in our organisation’s aims and daily activities. Our anti-racism pledge sets out the proactive steps we are undertaking to deliver against this commitment.

By encouraging as many people as possible to get involved, we aspire to improve health and wellbeing for people in Sunderland; building confidence and aspirations, and creating connectivity in our communities.
We recognise the wealth of life experience, skills, ideas and knowledge that exists in our local communities, and the valuable contribution that volunteers from our communities can make to the aims of Sunderland Culture.
Sunderland Culture is committed to providing meaningful, enjoyable and safe volunteer assignments of real value within clear and appropriate programmes of activities.
