What is Arts Award?

To achieve an Arts Award Explore, children and young people collect evidence in an individual arts log of their experiences of:

  • taking part in arts activities
  • researching artists or craftspeople and arts organisations
  • creating an artwork
  • sharing their arts discoveries

Chris Folwell is a participatory artist used to working with groups of children and young people. Throughout this Arts Award, he will be using artworks from Arts Council Collection to creatively explore ideas around life in lockdown, and looking after ourselves and each other this summer.

There are a limited number of places for this activity – if you would like to take part please complete the expression of interest form below and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Further information

Age suitability: Arts Award Explore is open to children and young people aged 7-25. We suggest this series of workshops is suitable for children aged 11+, but please get in touch if you have a younger child who wants to take part.

Dates: It’s important that you can attend all sessions in order to complete your Arts Award.

Introduction session: Thursday Aug 6th 2pm

Let’s meet virtually! This session will help us get to know each other. We know meeting new people online can feel a bit weird, but we’ll learn about each other and have some fun in this first session.

Arts Award Explore Sessions: Aug 10th, 13th, 17th, and 20th from 2-4pm

Sessions are likely to last 1.5 hours, with a short comfort break in the middle.

During sessions, Chris will lead you through a series of activities and workshops, and lead group discussions. Participants will be expected to work on projects outside of session time to complete their Arts Award.

Safety Online:
We understand the importance of keeping children and young people safe online. All sessions will be recorded and stored securely in line with GDPR, and full safety instructions will be sent to all participants in advance of the sessions.

Materials:
Participants will receive everything they need to take part before the first session in the post. Participants might be asked to collect household materials (cardboard, waste paper, packaging) to use in sessions. All materials are FREE to participants.

Accessibility:
If you or your child requires written or verbally presented information in a different format please get in contact with [email protected] so we can tailor the course to your needs.

How much does it cost?
It is free to take part, but places are limited (…so sign up asap to avoid disappointment!)

Moderation:
At the end of the course there will be a form to fill in on our website with a few questions about the journey and details about your young people. This is so we can get your Awards and Certificates processed.

Certificate and Online Sharing Celebration:We will be sharing Arts Award journeys on Sunderland Culture’s website and social media at the end of the summer holidays. When Arts Award booklets are complete, we will moderate and send off for certificates which will be posted out to participants.
