Bright Lights: Youth Arts Festival 2024

A week of free workshops, performances and screenings to run alongside the Bright Lights Youth Arts Exhibition.

All workshops are free and suitable for ages 11-19 year olds unless noted.

Bright Lights Film Shorts Showcase
Wednesday 21st February, 6:30pm, Free
Ages 8+
Join Washington Young Film Makers Collective for a night of short films! 


Growing Pains
Thursday 22nd February, 6:30pm, £5 (adults)/£3 (students)
Ages 11+
Sunderland College present a night of stand-up comedy, poignant spoken word poetry, soul-stirring songs, captivating movement, and inspirational monologues on the subject of growing up.


Washington Emerging
Friday 23rd February, 6pm-9pm, £2.50
All Ages
An evening of performances by the North East’s best up-and-coming young musicians, plus craft stalls from Washington MIND’s Teenage Market and drop-in arts activities.

Creative Typography
Tuesday 20 February, 1pm-3pm
Learn how to use creative typography to illustrate everything music.


Mask Making (SEN-Friendly)
Tuesday 20 February, 1pm-3pm
Learn about masking in autistic people and make your own mask to represent you and the things you love.


Stop-Motion Animation
Wednesday 21 February, 10am-3pm
Make a character, create a world for them to exist in and then bring it all to life using traditional animation methods.


Make a Play in a Day!
Wednesday 21 February, 10am-3pm
Make a play using creative exercises, improvisation and working in teams to create interesting characters and scenes.


Creative You Junior… Mini Masterpiece!
Thursday 22 February, 10am-3pm
A day of activities designed to unleash your creativity.


Metal Embossing
Thursday 22 February, 10:30am-12:30pm
Learn the skills to emboss a recycled metal sheet and create a positive word, symbol or design on metal.


T-Shirt Design
Thursday 22 February, 1pm-3pm
Experiment with a range of fashion illustration techniques and take home a unique hand painted t-shirt!


Eco-Writing
Friday 23 February, 10:30am-12:30pm
Explore familiar and strange landscapes, write about the planet, nature and what’s important to you.


An Introduction to DJ’ing
Friday 23 February, 10:30am-12:30pm
Learn how to mix, scratch and create your own DJ set.


Song Writing
Friday 23 February, 1pm-4pm
Creative process from scratch – composing the song, creating the arrangement and rehearsing the song.


Animation (SEN-Friendly)
Friday 23 February, 1pm-3pm
Learn about different animation techniques, design your own characters, and add sound effects to bring them to life.


Creative Youth Challenge with Curious Arts
Saturday 24 February, 10am-2:30pm
Join Curious Arts at Arts Centre Washington and take part in a day filled with banner making, creative writing and more!

Bright Lights Festival Fringe: Young People’s Cyanotype Workshop

Love photography? Love wildlife? Bring your passions together in this fun workshop create cyanotype photography inspired by ocean landscapes.


Bright Lights Festival Fringe: Digital Nature Photography Walk

Tuesday 20 February
11am – 1pm (Learning Space)
£5 per person
Ages 8 – 12 years

Pick up some top digital photography tips then head out into Mowbray Park for a photography walk to capture plant, wildlife and landscape images.


Wild Prints
Thursday 22 February, 11am – 12.30pm (Learning Space)
£2 per person
Ages 8 – 12
Make your own relief printed pictures inspired by animals and landscapes in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition.
