Free weekly arts workshops for young people aged 11–19 in the Washington area.


Teenage Craft Club – Tuesdays (Fortnightly), 5-6:30pm, free.
A space to for young people to meet, learn and create. Learn craft skills with a variety of guest artists and makers and get the chance to sell your work at craft fairs.

14th November – Introduction to Pewter Sheet
In this session the group will be learning about the properties of pewter and the different techniques and tools they can use to create unique designs. We will learn how to transfer their design to metal and raise some of the areas and add some colour if they wish. Their design will be then added to a bookmark, notebook or small box.

28th November – Christmas Gonk
In this session the learners will create a felt Christmas Gonk. They will pick from a range of materials and use the templates to cut out the pattern. We will learn several different sewing techniques to create their unique character and will have the option to add embellishments.

5th December – Paper Origami Memory Blanket
In this session the group will explore ideas of belonging and to help make a paper origami quilt inspired by the traditions of local mining communities. We will have the chance to make ink from driftwood charcoal, experiment with using writing to make abstract patterns, and fold modules that will be part of an origami paper quilt that will go on to be exhibited locally.

12th December – Christmas Wire Tree and Earrings
In this session the group will learn to create a wire Christmas tree decoration using a range of wire working techniques and tools. We can add beads and coloured wires to make their designs unique to them. The techniques they have learnt can then be used to make a smaller version, which can be turned into a pair of festive earrings which will make a lovely Christmas gift.


Bright Lights Young Artists Collective – Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30pm, free. (There is a waiting list for this session – please register and we will be in touch with availability)
A group for young people who want to develop their artistic skills and knowledge.
• Develop your style / practice
• Work with and meet local professional artists
• Take part in workshops in different art forms
• Share ideas with likeminded young artist


Washington Young Film Makers Collective – Based at Washington Millennium Centre – Mondays, 4:30-6:30pm, free.
Write, shoot and edit your own movies learning about the equipment and techniques along the way in this fun series of free workshops!


Washington Young Writers Collective – Based at Washington Town Centre Library – Wednesdays (Fortnightly), 4:30-6:30pm, free.
Hone your creative writing skills in a friendly, laid-back environment. Join other like-minded young writers to learn and try out different forms, styles and genres.

Creative You Expression of Interest Form

Creative You is a project for young people living or educated in Washington. Therefore places will be allocated on this basis.


Creative You is supported by Sunderland City Council’s Washington Area Committee.
