Dementia and Imagination Training with Equal Arts

Tuesday 16 November 2021, 10am- 12.30pm

Via Zoom

Sunderland Culture are teaming up with Equal Arts to offer artists and creative practitioners who live, work or study in Sunderland a chance to take part in their Dementia and Imagination training.

The training is aimed at artists and creative practitioners from across art forms who would like to gain insight into working with people living with dementia.

Offering an interactive and active learning approach, the training provides participants with an understanding of the imagination model in engaging with people living with dementia, and the confidence to create inclusive, dementia-friendly creative opportunities that are ‘inspired by imagination’.

Equal Arts’ training supports participants to:

  • Gain an understanding of the effects of dementia
  • Recognise the value of an imagination approach to communication and delivery
  • Support a user-led approach to developing and delivering inclusive, dementia-friendly creative opportunities
  • Understand the importance of multi-sensory exploration and how to address all five senses in workshops
  • Explore the art of improvised story-telling to aid communication and stimulate imagination
  • Trial new creative techniques to build confidence and time for reflection

Further to taking part this training, artists or creative practitioners will be invited to apply for a paid opportunity to shadow and support Sunderland Culture’s Creative Age sessions. You will also receive mentorship in developing your own sessions for people living with dementia from an experienced artist.
