First There is a Mountain

Sunday 18 August, 10am -2pm

Roker Beach, Sunderland, Free, drop-in

Connecting the archipelago via one water, one tide, one sand; carrying mountains of sand across time.

Join us for a special free event at Roker Beach to transform the beach into sand mountains as part of a new touring participatory artwork by Katie Paterson.

Specially created ‘bucket and spade’ sets in the form of world famous mountains: Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Shasta (USA), Mount Fuji (Asia), Stromboli (Europe) and Uluru (Oceania) will be available on the day to build mountains across the beaches that will be washed away by the enveloping tide.

First There is a Mountain tours 25 high-profile arts venues and their local sandy beaches over British Summer Time 2019.

A great day out for all the family – just turn up at Roker Beach anytime between 10am and 2pm to join in. All ages and abilities welcome.
