To coincide with 900 miles (From Home), Jade Sweeting’s first public solo exhibition currently on display in Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art’s Collection Space, Sweeting will be in-conversation with musician and collaborator Stuart Walkinshaw and NGCA curator Jon Weston chaired by artist Cody Sowerby. The discussion will delve into Jade’s artistic practice, collaborative approach and producing the exhibition 900 miles (From Home).

Biographies:

Jade Sweeting is a Middlesbrough born and Newcastle based artist-photographer, printmaker and researcher. Recent projects include: Still Moving (w/ Phyllis Christopher and Kuba Ryniewicz), Workplace Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne (2023); Hip Reading (w/Jenni Mac)Curious Festival 2022, Northern Stage, Newcastle (2022); co- curator of the On Our Backs: An Archive (w/ Janina Sabaliauskaite), The NewBridge Project, Newcastle upon Tyne (2018), First Bowie, Now This!, The Gymnasium Gallery, Berwick (2017).

Stuart Walkinshaw is a collaborative sound artist from Northumberland. Under the moniker SL Walkinshaw, he releases experimental ambient music that explores the fragility of nature and sound through chanced cassette loops, found sound and electronics.

Jon Weston is a curator currently working at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland. He has previously held curatorial positions for Sunderland Culture’s Art Council Collection National Partners Programme and Modern Art Oxford and exhibition department positions at Whitechapel Art Gallery and Gasworks, London. As an independent curator he has worked on public contemporary art projects across Oxford and Essex. Curatorial interests include using public spaces, socially engaged arts practice, politics, economics and the intersection between art and music.

Cody Sowerby is an artist from Middlesbrough who uses sculpture, found objects and photography to explore the psychic terrain of the post-industrial landscape. Cody lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne and has shown nationally and internationally including shows at The Newbridge Project, Newcastle (2019); NCA, Newcastle (2023); University of Victoria, Canada (2023) and Atelier 2020, Mexico (2022).
