Museum Shop Sunday

We’ll be joining over 1,000 cultural organisations worldwide on Sunday 1 December by putting cultural shops in the spotlight.

To mark the occasion, we’re offering everyone who spends over £10 in our Shop a FREE local souvenir that day!

In celebration of our products from local designers and makers, we have several special guests on the day too!

12-4pm, come and watch local artist Alf Snell complete his latest painting here in our Museum Shop.

Alf Snell has produced art prints from his iconic oil paintings of 1950’s Sunderland. The paintings capture bustling street scenes of city landmarks including the Museum & Winter Gardens, Empire Theatre, Fawcett Street, High Street and Seaburn coastline. Period trains, trams and buses complete with the classic ‘Shop at Binns’ signage provide a glimpse of this period of Sunderland’s history.

1pm – 3pm: Neil Sinclair will be signing copies of his new book

Former curator at Sunderland Museum, Neil Sinclair has published the second edition of his popular
illustrated history of Sunderland’s railways. Telling the story from the early wagonways to the
present day, the 124-page book contains 190 Illustrations .

Stocking a range of design-led gifts from toys and books to hand-crafted jewellery and homewares from local makers, there’s something for everyone and a great place to pick up a gift perfect for the festive period!

So get ahead of the game with your Christmas Shopping and join us in celebrating your local cultural shop here in Sunderland this 1 December.
