Pimm’s and Pyrex: People’s Pyrex Celebration Event

Saturday 27 July, 2-4pm, Arts Centre Washington

You are invited to join us at Arts Centre Washington for Pimm’s & Pyrex, an event which celebrates the closing of the exhibition People’s Pyrex on Saturday 27 July from 2-4pm.

People’s Pyrex is an exhibition which celebrates our close relationship to Pyrex Glass. Between 1922 and 2007, all Pyrex sold across the British Commonwealth (with the exception of Canada) was made in Sunderland. As well as making it, we also used it – and the familiar shapes and patterns are woven into many family memories.
Over the course of the exhibition, we have received 143 loans (so far!) from our local community, who have also shared stories and memories with us about lifelong friendships made on the factory floor, 21st birthday celebrations and the smell of fresh lemon meringue pie.

On Saturday 27th July, we will be hosting a celebration at Arts Centre Washington to mark the close of this exhibition which has sparked so many memories for so many people.

Join us from 2pm in the gallery for a welcome drink and to look at the pieces in the collection. Poet Sky Hawkins will be in the gallery, gathering stories and recollections that she will transform into a poem to be performed at the end of the event.

At 2.30pm, we’ll make our way to the Theatre for a panel discussion hosted by Posy Jowett, Project Co-Ordinator about life in the Pyrex factory, the influence of Pyrex on contemporary glassmaking in Sunderland, and the impact of Pyrex on contemporary tableware design.

After the close of the panel discussion, we’ll head back to the gallery where you can enjoy a drink, collect your Pyrex pieces, and chat with our panel members informally.
This event is FREE!
