For Beethoven, the violin wasn’t just a musical instrument – it was a hotline to the Infinite. “What do I care for your wretched fiddle when I’m speaking to my God!”, he’s supposed to have shouted; but then, he’d never heard the RNS’s leader Maria Włosczcowska, an artist who thrives on collaboration, and on musical drama. Tonight, she reaches for the heavens in Beethoven’s serene (and sublime) Violin Concerto, and plays as first among equals in the haunting Cavatina. Is this the most beautiful music Beethoven ever wrote? It’s certainly a striking contrast to the dark undercurrents and fiery dance-rhythms of Bartók’s powerful Divertimento.
