Smoove & Turrell
The story of Smoove & Turrell began in post-millennium North East of England with a group of working-class lads and a shared passion for soul. Representing the highs and lows of life they combine socially conscious lyrics with irrepressible dancefloor euphoria. Smoove & Turrell returned in 2020 with “Stratos Bleu”, their 6th studio album which went to No.1 in the Official UK Dance Chart. Keyboard player Mike Porter’s collection of analogue synths came to the fore on the new album with a nod to the heady days of early 90’s clubbing which may be a surprise to some but in the context of this band as dancefloor favourites, it makes perfect sense.
Voices of Virtue
The North East’s powerhouse gospel choir, Voices of Virtue started out as a duo of close friends (Matti and Chichi) dubbed Chayil (meaning virtuous woman). As they gained popularity they expanded, growing quickly from a duo to a full–scale choir under the name Voices of Virtue. For this Fire Station opening season party, they kick off the show with an uplifting set of soul/gospel classics.
Newcastle’s rising star Kay Greyson fuses modern hip hop with the skill of the golden era. Inspired by 90s hip hop legends, she articulately delivers insight into difficult subject matter while remaining both optimistic and downright funky.
Origin Crew are the North East’s hottest, jaw dropping, eye popping, no holds barred dance combo.
With kind support from Northern Roots.
This event is part of The Fire Station opening season – Firestarters. Firestarters is commissioned by Sunderland Music Arts and Culture Trust and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
