Sunderland Film Club presents… Ratcatcher

Wednesday 24th July, 7pm, Tickets £5

At Port Independent, 4 St. Thomas’ Street, SR1 1QD

Join us at Port Independent this July for a screening of Lynne Ramsey’s poetic evocation of childhood – Ratcatcher.

12-year-old James Gillespie has a secret. Burdened by guilt and alienated from those around him, James befriends outcast Margaret Anne and experiences his first tender romance. Desperate to escape the squalor of 70’s Glasgow, he finds solace in the discovery of a half-built housing development on the outskirts of town and an imagined future away from the tenements.

Making her the second Scottish woman to direct a feature film, Ramsey’s debut eschews social realism for a magical lyricism in this meditation on trauma, poverty and the cruelties of coming of age.

This screening is part of This Woman’s Work – a new, monthly programme of screenings highlighting world cinema’s greatest female filmmakers.

As part of our season focusing on Lynne Ramsay, we will also be screening Morvern Callar and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Sunderland Film Club, Wearside’s documentary and independent focused community cinema, hosts monthly screenings, talks and workshops at Arts Centre Washington and Port Independent.

Sunderland Film Club is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
