Sunderland Illustrated: Celebrating 30 years of The University of Sunderland

Stories of who we are by those who know us best
24 September – 11 December 2022

2022 marks the 30th anniversary of our city’s former polytechnic being awarded university status. To mark the occasion, we have commissioned a special exhibition for Sunderland Creatives Gallery.

National Glass Centre has worked with local artist and illustrator, Kathryn Robertson, to tell the story of key moments of our history by interpreting diverse stories from students, staff and the wider University community.

Storytellers include Fulwell 73 Director Leo Pearlman, crime fiction writer Ann Cleeves and local businesswoman Dame Irene Hayes. Kathryn will be on site in the gallery for two days to create a Sunderland themed mural on 16th and 17th September to celebrate the people and places of the city. The completed mural will form part of the exhibition and family activities.
