The Monocle is a new dance performance by the celebrated, award-winning choreographer Mathieu Geffre.
For one night only, become a visitor of The Monocle, one of the most flamboyant lesbian cabaret clubs in 1930’s Paris. Hidden in the streets of Montparnasse, this club gathers some of the greatest characters you’ll meet in a dance piece. In there, the air is thick, warm and wavy with secrets and sensuality, women laugh loudly, drink the night away and dance in each other’s arms. But appearances can be misleading, and the apparent euphoria doesn’t completely hide the threat from the outside.
Gathering a cast of six outstanding queer performers and a singer, The Monocle will transform the theatre into a ephemeral cabaret where you’ll take part in an unforgettable evening of contemporary dance and music. So don your glad rags and don’t forget your monocle – this will be a night to remember…
Rendez-Vous Dance is led by award-winning choreographer Mathieu Geffré who established the company following a fifteen-year career as a performer, collaborating with some of the most celebrated artists in the world including Itzik Galili, Christopher Bruce, Didy Veldman, Angelin Preljocaj and Johann Inger. Rendez-Vous Dance creates projects to tell past and present stories of LGBTQ+ communities.
A Made in the North East commission, Mathieu Geffré received the award by a consortium of nine North East venues who are working together on a three year strategic dance audience development project led by Dance City and made possible with funding from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The commission aims for the partners to develop a better understanding and commitment to programming dance performances in the region.
This event is part of The Fire Station opening season – Firestarters. Firestarters is commissioned by Sunderland Music Arts and Culture Trust and supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
