Youth Arts Exhibition 2021: Bright Lights

Arts Centre Washington’s annual Youth Arts Exhibition is looking for submissions for BRIGHT LIGHTS 2021. Supported by Sunderland Culture, BRIGHT LIGHTS will showcase some of the most exciting artwork by young people in Washington and the Greater Sunderland Area, and will be curated by The Celebrate Different Collective.

This is an exciting opportunity for 11-19 year olds to submit artwork for display in Arts Centre Washington’s professional gallery.

Submissions of existing and newly created work across art forms including visual arts, sculpture, music, video and creative writing are welcomed.

The themes of this year’s exhibition are inspired by the Paint the Town in Sound exhibition at Sunderland Museum Winter Gardens. The Themes are:

Expression and Identity 

The Modern World

The Lockdown

Locality and Heritage

Freedom and Social Change

We will also be producing a digital version of the exhibition.

The Celebrate Different Collective is a group of young people aged 13-25 from across Sunderland who, with support from Sunderland Culture, co-produce and run their own cultural events, work with artists and learn new practical skills. The group explored the artists and themes in Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden’s upcoming exhibition Paint the Town in Sound, part of Arts Council Collection National Partners programme, to determine the themes of this years Bright Lights Exhibition.

Submissions open until 4pm on Wednesday 20th of January 2021.
ARTWORK CRITERIA

You can submit a maximum of three artworks.
Please submit up to three images per artwork you wish to submit.

  • The themes of this year’s exhibition are inspired by the Paint the Town in Sound exhibition at Sunderland Museum Winter Gardens. The Themes are: Expression and Identity  // The Modern World // The Lockdown // Locality and Heritage // Freedom and Social Change.

As we are limited in space, we have a restriction of A1 size for 2D artwork, and 1mx1m (footprint) for 3D or sculptural work. Please consider this when submitting your work for review.

To submit artwork, please complete the for above or download the form and email it, along with your submission images (no originals please), to:

If you are submitting more than one artwork, please complete a different form for each piece and clearly label your image files so they refer to the artwork title.

Submission deadline:. 4pm on Wednesday 20th of January 2021. We will let you know whether you have been successful on Thursday 28th of January 2021.

Please note: if you are selected, physical submissions will be accepted from 10am – 4pm on 29th,30th, 2nd and 3rd of February 2021

At the end of the exhibition, artwork can be collected from 13th April all artwork must be collected by 30 April.
