Assistant Stage Managers for Public Record

This April will see the culmination of a year-long project with Sunderland communities to create Public Record, an affectionate portrait of contemporary Sunderland told through its music, dance and spoken word.  The diverse, intergenerational and inclusive core community company of over 50 participants drawn from local communities range from 5 years to 94 years old. They will be joined by cameo groups: the Young Musicians Project and Dance Jam as well as several professional dancers, guest musicians and a live band.

There is a professional creative and production team of over 30 people, the key Creative Team are:

The wider team includes creative associates and show and company producers. The Production Team includes Production Manager, Stage Manager, Deputy Stage Manager and 2 x Assistant Stage Managers.

The 2 ASM’s will join the final stage of the process rehearsing at Southpaw Studio in the Sheepfolds development in Sunderland before moving to The Fire Station for the production week and 4 performances across 25 – 27 April.

Assistant Stage Manager Duties

 

  • Assist in setting up the rehearsal space, including mark ups, arranging props, furniture, and other equipment as directed by the Stage Manager and/or Deputy Stage Manager
  • Provide support to performers and the creative team during rehearsals, including helping with costume, distributing scripts, and managing props
  • Assist the Production Manager and Stage Manager with the get in, fit up and Get out of The Fire Station
  • Assist with technical rehearsals, helping to coordinate cues and transitions between scenes, as well as assisting with any technical elements as needed
  • Help maintain and organise props, ensuring they are in the correct place and in good condition for rehearsals and performances
  • Assist with setting up/reset the backstage area before performances, including organising props, costumes, and other backstage elements
  • During performances, assist in managing the backstage area, ensuring that performers and crew are in place and ready for their cues and assisting with scene changes
  • Help with costume maintenance, including laundering costumes between performances and making any necessary repairs
  • Run errands as needed, such as picking up supplies or delivering messages between the Stage Manager and other members of the production team
  • To assist the Stage Manager with any returns of hired or borrowed props, costumes or equipment
  • To share driving responsibilities for any hired or borrowed vehicle used for transporting set, props, costumes etc between storage facility, rehearsal space and performance venue.
  • To maintain the storage space ensuring it is kept clean, tidy and secure
  • Attend Production Meetings when requested by the Production Manager
  • Be prepared to assist with various tasks and responsibilities as they arise, providing support wherever needed to ensure the smooth running of the production

Essential Criteria

  • Experience in Stage Management
  • Ability and willingness to work unsocial hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays
  • Current Full Driving License
  • Experience of sourcing props
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • To have an organised and flexible approach to work
  • Ability to work and remain calm under pressure
  • Have the ability to work unsupervised and use initiative.
  • Have excellent time keeping and problem solving skills.
  • Remain calm and collected in high pressure and stressful situations

Desirable Criteria

  • Have experience of working on a variety of productions with a diverse range of groups and individuals of varying abilities and ages
  • First Aid qualification
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements
  • Good prop making skills
  • Experience of driving vans

Contract Dates

Thursday 27 March – Wednesday 30 April (5 weeks)

The role is full time and incorporates the community company rehearsal schedule which is every Thursday evening & every other Friday evening & Saturday (full day – sometimes evenings as well).

 

Fee

£516.32 per week
