At National Glass Centre and Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, we strive to make everyone feel safe and welcome while visiting our venue.

We recognise that not all disabilities are visible or long term. We hope that the information below will help you plan your visit.

If you have any additional needs for your visit that are not addressed below, please get in touch.

We also have walkthrough videos and a social story, which can help you to familiarise yourself with our venue and what to expect on your visit. Please note that we have changing exhibitions, so some areas will have different displays and may look very different to how they are shown in the videos and social story.

Our Venue

Car Park & Entrance

The is a car park directly outside of our venue including blue badge bays. There is a charge for parking here which can be paid via the Just Park app or by phone – see signage outside the building for details.

The main entrance to National Glass Centre is step free. There is a wide downward sloping ramp towards the doors with handrails on both sides.

There is an assisted revolving door at the centre and a wide push button automatic door to the right.

The main entrance leads you onto the first floor of the building and into the reception area.

Getting around

The Centre is based on two floors. You can move between the two floors step-free.

Visitor Services, National Glass Centre Gallery, Shop and Glass Yard cafe are based on the first floor.

The Hot Glass Studios and Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art are based on the ground floor.

You can get to the Hot Glass Studios using a series of ramps inside the building.

You can get to Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art from outside the National Glass Centre by walking down the sloped path to towards the riverside.

Hearing loop

There is a portable induction hearing loop system at the Visitor Services desk.

Toilets and changing facilities

There are 2 accessible toilet facilities at National Glass Centre.

  • First floor (to the right of the main entrance): One unisex accessible toilet. This toilet is locked with a RADAR key available from the Visitor Services desk.
  • First floor (to the left of the main entrance): same as above

All accessible toilets are fitted vertical handrails either side of the basin and toilet, horizontal rails on the wall adjacent to the toilet and an emergency pull cord.

There are 2 standard toilet facilities at National Glass Centre.

  • First floor: Male toilets and female toilets to the right of the main entrance
Seating

There are seating places throughout National Glass Centre where visitors can rest.

There are cushioned bench seats integrated into the Welcome desk and there are sofas at the riverside entrance foyer.

Wheelchair hire & mobility scooters

Three manual wheelchairs are available for loan free of charge from the Visitor Services desk. We offer these on a first come, first serve basis.

Fire alarms

The fire alarms in the building give an audible tone and visual flashing light warning.

We have a set of evacuation procedures and, should you require it, someone will assist you in exiting the building.

Displays, exhibitions and attractions

There are interactive touch screen activities throughout National Glass Centre which can be accessed from a seated or standing position.

There are information boards around the building. Some of these boards have pictures to help explain their meaning.

There are objects of interest held in glass cabinets in the various galleries, most of these are upright. Some items may not be visible if your eye line is below 115cm.

Lighting in the galleries is generally bright and evenly lit, however, some areas are more dimly lit to protect the exhibits.
