Art Workshops

Explore the Museum’s art collections and try different art techniques in these hands-on learning sessions.

  • Lowry Landscapes

    Keystages: KS1, KS2
    Subject: History, Art & Design

    Discover a sense of time and place exploring our large collection of L.S. Lowry’s paintings and drawings. Work together as a class to draw a landscape inspired by the session. This session is 90 minutes long.

    Charges: £75 for a class of up to 35 pupils. Half price for groups of 15 or less.

    Other Information: Can be adapted for SEND pupils.

  • The Sunderland Sculptures Safari

    Keystages: KS1, KS2
    Subject: Art, Local Study

    Local legends, lion’s heads and Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.  This one-hour session will take pupils on an interactive sculpture tour in Mowbray Park!  We will use storytelling, art and drama to help pupils explore and understand the shape, form and texture of the scupltures.

    Charges: £51 for a class of up to 35 pupils.  Half price for groups of 15 or less.

    Other information: Can be adapted for SEND pupils.

  • Rainforest Explorers: Art Explosion

    Keystages: EYFS, KS1, KS2, KS3

    Subject: Art, Geography, STEM

    Explore the amazing Winter Gardens on a sketching trail to draw rainforest leaves of different sizes, shapes and textures and how these adaptations help the plant thrive. Find drip tips, waxy, striped and holey leaves. Use these ideas to create large pastel drawings of leaves for a rainforest collage artwork. This session is 90 minutes long.

  • National Partners Programme with Arts Council Collection

    From 2019 – 2022 Sunderland Culture are part of the National Partners Programme with Arts Council Collection, bringing the best of UK contemporary and modern art to Sunderland and the region. Recent exhibitions have included Received Wisdom and Paint the Town in Sound and our app Art Crush can help your pupils explore the Art Council Collection in a new and exciting ways.

    As part of our exhibition learning programmes schools can take part in facilitated sessions and projects with Museum staff and artists.

    Sessions can be tailored to the needs of your students depending on age and subject interest. Sunderland Museum works with a number of high-quality local artists who can deliver workshops for your students to teach new skills or develop techniques and ideas, using our new Learning Space where you can get hands on and creative.

    Charges:

    90 minute session with Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens Learning team: £75

    2 hour artist-led workshop: £100. Full day with an artist: £250.
