Our Story

The Fire Station is a vibrant, mid-scale live music and performance venue in the heart of Sunderland – housing the brand-new state-of-the-art auditorium and the Engine Room bar & bistro. Whether you’re an indie rock champion, adventurous jazzer, theatre buff, comedy enthusiast or just after a great night out, our programme is packed with entertainment from music and comedy to dance and theatre. With studios, rehearsal space and teaching rooms upstairs, we’re inviting you to give it a go for yourself as well as nurturing the next generation of performers.

The impressive restoration of the 1908 Central Fire Station was completed by the Sunderland MAC Trust in 2017, with the Engine Room bar & bistro becoming a staple in the city for anyone looking for a place with great atmosphere to meet friends for good food and a drink.

The Fire Station also introduced Live Theatre and Dance City to Sunderland in our brand-new studios, offering an array of workshops and inviting people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to give it a go.

In 2019, work began on the creation of our stunning new Auditorium – extending the existing Fire Station to create a versatile, mid-scale performance space providing an exciting year-round programme of music, theatre, comedy and dance for all tastes.

The Fire Station is the latest venue to join the Sunderland Culture family including Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, National Glass Centre, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art and Arts Centre Washington.
