What is Autonomy?

Autonomy is a new, creative programme for autistic individuals living in Sunderland. It has been set up to help autistic young people (16-25) to socially and creatively connect with other autistic young adults and their carers. We believe that autistic adults should have the freedom and ability to enjoy creative and cultural opportunities, whilst being respected as individuals with unique needs and preferences.

What does Autonomy offer?

  • Trained SEND staff to ensure individual needs will be respected and accommodated
  • Sensory Adjustments – lowered cinema sounds levels and reduced brightness
  • Flexible seating to allow freedom of movement for those who need it
  • Quiet areas – designated spaces for individuals who need to take a break
  • Low participant numbers to reduce sensory-overload
  • Accessibility – wheelchair accessible location with a venue social story and pre-visit video tour available
