Event description

Explore the stories of Sunderland’s collieries through the faces and the words of 40 of the people who knew them best. Coal Face is an exhibition of film and tintype portraiture from local photographer Andy Martin, as well as poetry from writer Dr Louise Powell, both of whom have won awards for their work. Through a dialogue between word and image, Powell and Martin create a compelling narrative about working life in Sunderland’s mines – and what it means to have seen the collieries close.

Coal Face is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and delivered in partnership with Sunderland Culture, Cultural Spring, Redhills Durham and University College London.
