Event description
The enigmatic author of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking Glass’ is sometimes portrayed as a recluse who never left Oxford, and who was only happy in the company of children. In fact, he enjoyed travelling all over Britain and had a wide circle of friends, some of them famous Victorian celebrities. This talk is a tour of the places that were special to Carroll and examines his links with North East England.
Andy Collins has been fascinated by the Alice stories since appearing as the Dormouse, aged 9, in a school production. Since then he has been a collector of Alice books, and books about their author, and now possesses more than 400 titles. He is a member of the Lewis Carroll Society and has given talks about the author in various locations including Durham University, of which he is a graduate and where he is currently serving as a Bedel.
