Event description
Join us at Arts Centre Washington this January for a screening of Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson’s radically hopeful concert film – Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).
Over six weeks during the summer of 1969, New York’s Mount Morris Park was host to The Harlem Cultural Festival – an epic celebration of Black history, culture and fashion. Overshadowed by Woodstock, footage from the festival was never screened and largely forgotten – until now.
Featuring never-before-seen performances by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Sly & the Family Stone, Summer of Soul immortalises a defining moment in 20th century culture.
Sunderland Film Club
This screening is part of Sunderland Film Club – Wearside’s documentary and independent focused community cinema, hosting monthly screenings, talks and workshops at Arts Centre Washington and Port Independent.
Sunderland Film Club is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
