Event description
This exhibition showcases ceramic works created by a vibrant community of veterans, their families, and friends over the past six months. Under the guidance of artist and PhD researcher Mary Watson, participants have explored a variety of clay-working techniques, including throwing, slab-building, coiling, and glazing.
Through weekly workshops, as well as special events like raku firing and mask-making, this group has not only developed new creative skills but also fostered meaningful social connections. The pieces on display are a testament to the power of artistic practice, offering a window into the personal journeys and collective experiences of Sunderland’s veteran community.
This program of activity is part of Mary Watson’s PhD research, Clay (co) Construction – Using Creative Clay Practice to Improve Health, Wellbeing, and Social Isolation within the Veteran Community in Sunderland. In partnership with the local charity Veterans in Crisis and funded by the AHRC through the Northern Bridge Consortium, this research will continue to explore the potential of creative clay practice within the veteran community until 2027.
