Sunderland Film Club presents… Morvern Callar

Wednesday 28th August, 7pm, Tickets £5

At Port Independent, 4 St. Thomas’ Street, SR1 1QD

Join us at Port Independent this August for a screening of Lynne Ramsey’s dreamlike rave-era parable – Morvern Callar.

Morvern Callar wakes up on Christmas morning to find her boyfriend has committed suicide. Instead of reporting his death, Morvern empties his bank account and sends his novel to a publisher under her own name. Using the cash, she and her friend Lanna trade Oban for Almeria and embark on a hedonistic and hallucinatory getaway to Southern Spain.

An adaption of Alan Warner’s cult novel of the same name, Ramsey’s second film transposes a feminist fairy tale onto the 18-30’s package holiday to tell a story of self-reinvention, desire and transformation.

This screening is part of This Woman’s Work – a new, monthly programme of screenings highlighting world cinema’s greatest female filmmakers.

As part of our season focusing on Lynne Ramsay, we will also be screening Ratcatcher and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Sunderland Film Club, Wearside’s documentary and independent focused community cinema, hosts monthly screenings, talks and workshops at Arts Centre Washington and Port Independent.

Sunderland Film Club is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
