Event description

Join us at Port Independent this October for a screening of Lynne Ramsey’s chilling tale of motherhood – We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Free-spirited Eva finds herself trading the city for the suburbs after an unplanned pregnancy upends her promising career. From birth, Kevin spends his life intent on frustrating, upsetting and eventually destroying his mother’s life. After he commits an act of violence that devastates the community, Eva is forced to reckon whether she ever really loved her son in the first place.

Ending a decade long career hiatus and marking her first project outside the UK, Ramsey’s third film explores themes recurrent in her work – guilt and grief – through the lens of middle-class American domesticity.

This screening is part of This Woman’s Work – a new, monthly programme of screenings highlighting world cinema’s greatest female filmmakers.

As part of our season focusing on Lynne Ramsay, we will also be screening Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar.

Sunderland Film Club is supported by Film Hub North, with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network, and Cinema for All’s Glow Scheme. The programme is funded by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.
